It is possible to find many cheap king size beds by looking on the internet.
There are specialist discount stores, and eBay sells a lot of beds. It certainly pays to look around this way. If there is a local range of stores selling beds, pick up some catalogues and compare prices.
Why buy a king size bed? For years people have been satisfied with the ‘normal size’ double bed (4’6” x 6’3” or 137cm x 191cm) but during the years since the Second World War children have grown much bigger. 6ft is not unusual for young adults these days, and they are correspondingly bigger in weight.
Unfortunately, beds are still being made in the roughly the same lengths, but they are at least now available in different widths, and a king size is the largest available from retail outlets in Europe, although it is possible to buy larger in the US. Standard king size is now 5’ x 6’5” or 1.5m x 2m. Not everyone wants to spend a fortune on their bed, although considering how long one spends in bed during their lifetime, a good bed is an equally good investment.
It is possible to buy the bed and mattress separately, or buy the bed and mattress as one unit. The useful thing with king size beds, is that they allow the purchase of two individual mattresses that can be joined together. This gives a greater choice of mattress for a couple. One can have an orthopaedic style mattress; the other a less firm type.

Bedroom size is also a factor in buying a king size bed. These days, bedrooms are not very roomy, so one should measure the size of the room against the size of the bed, or it’s possible to find the room too cramped by the bed.
Another thing to bear in mind is that special sized bed linen is needed for a king size bed, including blankets or duvet. These can be expensive, but check around good value home furnishing stores and home catalogues as these often have sales for bedding. Generally speaking, patterned bed linen is more expensive than plain, which is probably more suitable for cheap king size beds.
